Training contents: what we practise on board

The terms are not exam vocabulary here. They describe real situations: harbour, wind, crew, navigation, equipment and decisions on board.

Harbour manoeuvres

Approaching and leaving berths, reversing under wind, working with lines, fenders, boxes and piles.

Crew leadership

Clear communication, role distribution, calm command language and safe manoeuvre sequences.

Navigation & area decisions

Plotter, chart work, AIS, radar basics, safe alternatives and decisions in the Upper Adriatic.

Anchoring & route planning

Choosing anchorages, chain management, distances, weather windows and responsible route options.

Sail trim & boat handling

Setting sails, reefing, balance, course optimisation and understanding how the yacht reacts.

Board routine & yacht takeover

Motor checks, logbook, power, water, gas, safety equipment and handover logic for charter yachts.

Skippers in action

Depending on date and format, experienced skippers from the ONBOAT environment accompany the trip. The focus is calm seamanship, clear communication and safe decisions on board.

Practical context

At first sight you practise harbour manoeuvres, sail trim, navigation, plotter, AIS, radar, anchoring and coastal sailing. The deeper value is confidence: staying calmer, reading wind and space earlier, leading your crew clearly and taking over a charter yacht with more security.

ONBOAT attitude

For sailors who want to become more confident – and for people who want to lead more calmly rather than more loudly. You do not have to be perfect. What matters is the willingness to observe situations clearly, slow things down and make decisions that the crew can understand.

Practical knowledge before your next charter

Adriatic skipper training: practice, harbour manoeuvres and charter confidence

More depth for the real questions before your next charter: harbour manoeuvres, crosswind docking, crew leadership, practical training and the Monfalcone/Trieste training area.

Harbour manoeuvres

Typical harbour manoeuvres during training

Harbour manoeuvres are at the centre of many training requests. At sea there is room. In a harbour, room becomes limited. That is why we practise the procedures skippers really need later: moving slowly, reading distances, checking wind direction, preparing lines, briefing the crew and being able to abort a decision in time.

Depending on weather and harbour conditions, we train manoeuvres such as reversing into a berth, docking bow-first, departing with a spring line, turning in confined space, controlled astern handling and clean line work. What matters is not only the individual manoeuvre, but the procedure before it: who does what? Which line comes first? What is plan B?

The crew is deliberately included. A good harbour manoeuvre is not a solo performance by the skipper. It is a clear sequence with simple commands, prepared fenders, lines in the right place and people who know when to act and when not to act.

  • Reversing into the berth
  • Spring-line manoeuvres and line handling
  • Turning in confined space
  • Crew briefing before the manoeuvre

Crosswind

Docking in crosswind – the most common stress situation

Crosswind is one of the most common reasons why harbour manoeuvres become hectic. Even a few knots of wind can push the bow or stern sideways. On a 50-foot yacht you quickly feel whether speed, angle and crew preparation are right.

In training, the goal is not to experience crosswind as a surprise, but as a factor that can be planned. We check wind direction, available space, possible abort points, line positions and the right speed. Too slow can cost control; too fast increases risk. The useful range in between has to be experienced in practice.

Especially in crosswind, calmness is decisive. If you prepare too late, things become hectic. If you think beforehand, you manoeuvre more clearly. That is why we train not only the docking itself, but also observation, briefing, plan B and the courage to start a manoeuvre again.

  • Recognise wind direction and drift
  • Choose speed, angle and abort point
  • Prepare crew and lines before the manoeuvre
  • Restart instead of forcing it

Training area

Monfalcone, Trieste and the northern Adriatic as a training area

Monfalcone is particularly suitable as a starting point for skipper training. The marina is sheltered, the area is varied and the distances to useful training destinations are short. Depending on the weather, options open towards Trieste, Miramare, Grado, Duino, the Slovenian coast or Istria.

The Gulf of Trieste offers realistic conditions: thermal influences, Bora topics, harbour traffic, fairways, marinas and short legs. This exact mix is ideal for practising decisions without turning a training weekend into a long delivery passage.

The area is also easy to reach for participants from Germany, Austria and southern Germany. If you arrive on Friday, you can train intensively over the weekend and return home on Sunday with noticeably more confidence.

  • Marina Monfalcone as training base
  • Trieste, Miramare, Grado and Slovenia as options
  • Short distances, real conditions, many repetitions

3-day format

What does an intensive 3-day training look like?

The first day is about arriving, taking over the yacht, safety briefing, roles on board and first manoeuvres. We clarify the crew’s goals, experience and uncertainties. Then the first exercises with engine, lines and calm communication begin.

The second day is the intensive practice day. Depending on the weather, the focus is on harbour manoeuvres, sailing, navigation, anchoring, crew leadership and decisions in the area. Repetition matters: only those who steer themselves feel what the yacht is doing.

On the third day, the most important points are consolidated. We repeat manoeuvres, discuss typical charter mistakes and transfer what has been learned to the next trip of your own. The goal is that you not only know more, but genuinely feel safer on board.

  • Day 1: yacht, safety, first manoeuvres
  • Day 2: intensive practice and repetition
  • Day 3: consolidation, charter transfer, feedback

FAQ

Practical answers sorted by topic. Open a section and then the individual question.

General questions Booking, weather, arrival, costs and life on board.
Do I need sailing experience?

No. Many ONBOAT experiences are suitable without previous sailing knowledge. You may help actively if you like, or simply enjoy being a guest.

Can I join alone?

Yes. Solo travellers are welcome. Before confirmation we check whether date, crew size and cabin situation fit well.

Can I book as a couple or with friends?

Yes. You can request individual berths, cabins or, depending on the offer, the whole yacht exclusively.

How large are the groups?

ONBOAT deliberately works with small groups. This leaves room for questions, safety, personal guidance and real life on board.

What does all-in mean?

All-in means that the main services are transparently included. Depending on the offer this may include yacht, skipper, accommodation on board, basic board cash, normal harbour fees, gas, water and final cleaning.

Which additional costs may occur?

Additional costs are mainly personal expenses: travel, restaurants, special shore visits, individual drinks or special wishes. Unusual harbour fees or weather-related changes are discussed personally.

How does a request work?

You send a request. We personally check date, crew size, weather window, cabins and framework and reply with a suitable proposal.

When is a booking binding?

A booking becomes binding only after personal confirmation by ONBOAT and according to the agreed booking and payment conditions.

Do I have to pay immediately?

No. First we check whether the offer really fits. After that you receive the next steps transparently.

What happens in bad weather?

Safety comes before the programme. Route, timing or contents may be adjusted. If leaving harbour responsibly is not sensible, we decide calmly and transparently.

Who decides route and programme?

The final decision lies with the responsible skipper. Crew wishes are considered, but weather, safety and seamanship come first.

How do I get to Monfalcone?

Monfalcone can be reached by car, train and via the airports of Trieste, Venice or Treviso. Details are coordinated according to the date.

Are there parking options?

There are parking options in and around the marina depending on season. Before arrival we provide suitable guidance.

What should I bring?

Bring a soft travel bag instead of a hard suitcase, non-slip shoes, weatherproof clothing, sun protection, personal medication and what you really need for a few days on board.

What is a typical day on board like?

After weather check and short briefing there is sailing, training or passage, breaks, harbour or anchorage and a shared end of the day.

Is there Wi-Fi or power on board?

Power is available on board, but not unlimited like at home. Wi-Fi depends on mobile reception. For work or longer use we clarify needs beforehand.

What happens in case of illness?

Please inform us as early as possible. Depending on booking status, date and conditions we check fair options.

Can dates be postponed?

Sometimes yes, but not automatically. Yacht, crew, weather window and other bookings must fit together.

Are children or teenagers possible?

Yes, depending on format, age, weather, crew and responsibility situation. We check such requests especially carefully.

Why is every request checked personally?

Because weather, crew, experience, cabins, safety and expectations must fit together. ONBOAT is not a mass booking system.

Skipper training Practice, manoeuvres, crew leadership and charter preparation.
Do I need a sailing licence?

For skipper training, a licence or first practical experience is helpful. What matters is not paperwork, but becoming calmer in real situations.

What do we practise?

Harbour manoeuvres, line handling, crew leadership, navigation, weather decisions, anchoring and calm onboard routines – depending on weather and level.

Do we really practise harbour manoeuvres?

Yes. Berthing, leaving, springing off, reversing, side wind, lines and communication are practised repeatedly.

Is it suitable for charter preparation?

Yes. It is ideal for taking over a yacht, briefing crew, leaving harbour, making decisions and staying calm.

How is ONBOAT different from a sailing school?

The focus is less exam theory and more real practice, calm decisions, crew awareness and understandable seamanship.

Is it exam preparation?

Not in the narrow sense. It may help with exams, but the real value is safety and confidence on board.

What do we practise in crosswind?

We practise wind direction, drift, speed, angle, line positions, crew preparation and the point at which a manoeuvre is better aborted and started again.

How many harbour manoeuvres do we do per day?

That depends on weather, harbour traffic and crew. The aim is not a fixed number, but repeatable practice: every participant should steer as often as possible and receive feedback.

Is the training suitable after a sailing licence or SKS?

Yes. The training is especially useful after an exam or licence, because exam practice and real charter responsibility are often very different.

Can I join without my own crew?

Yes. Individual berths are possible. Before confirmation we check whether the date, crew size and cabin situation fit.

Do we practise night approaches?

If weather, date and crew allow it, navigation at dusk or a night approach can be part of the training. Safety and a sensible training flow come first.

Is navigation practised in a practical way?

Yes. We work with paper chart, plotter, AIS, local decisions, approaches, waypoints and the question of how planning and reality on the water fit together.

Is the skipper training also suitable for women?

Yes. The training is calm, respectful and practical. It is not about volume or show, but about clear procedures, safety and steering yourself.

What happens in strong wind?

If there is too much wind, we do not train at any price. We use the situation for weather decisions, planning, safety and, if appropriate, sheltered manoeuvres or theory on board.

Can we join as a couple?

Yes. Couples benefit especially because roles, communication and shared responsibility on board can be practised very well.

Do we also practise anchoring manoeuvres?

If weather and area allow it, we practise anchoring, choosing an anchorage, chain length, distribution of roles and monitoring the berth.

Does the training help before my first own charter?

Yes. That is exactly what it is designed for: yacht handover, crew briefing, harbour manoeuvres, day planning and calm decisions before taking responsibility for the first time.

Why does the training start from Monfalcone?

Monfalcone offers short distances, a good marina, reachable training destinations in the Gulf of Trieste and, depending on weather, options towards Grado, Trieste, Miramare, Slovenia or Istria.

Sailing basics & onboard practice Basic terms, knots, equipment and safety explained simply.
What is starboard?

Starboard is the right-hand side of a vessel when looking forward.

What is port side?

Port is the left-hand side of a vessel when looking forward.

What is a fender?

A fender protects yacht and quay from pressure marks and damage when berthing.

What is a cleat?

A cleat is a fitting for securing lines. Mooring lines are led and fixed there.

What is a figure-eight knot?

A figure-eight knot is a stopper knot at the end of a line. It prevents the line from running through a block or eye and looks like an eight.

What is a bowline?

A bowline creates a fixed loop that does not tighten under load. It is one of the most important knots on board.

What is a clove hitch?

A clove hitch is useful for quickly attaching fenders or lines to rails, stanchions or posts.

What means making fast on a cleat?

A line is led around the cleat with turns and a locking turn so it holds but can be released again.

What is the mainsheet?

The mainsheet controls and trims the mainsail. It is one of the most important lines in the cockpit.

What is an in-mast furling mainsail?

It rolls into the mast. It is comfortable to handle, but needs careful use and awareness of wind pressure.

What is a battened mainsail?

It has battens that stabilise the sail shape. It often performs better but requires more manual handling.

What is a sprayhood?

A sprayhood protects the companionway and forward cockpit area from wind, spray and weather.

What is a bimini?

A bimini is a sun canopy over the cockpit. It provides shade but still needs attention in wind.

What is a saildrive?

A saildrive is a compact drive unit under the hull. It transfers engine power directly to the propeller.

What is prop walk?

When reversing, the propeller creates sideways force. The stern moves to port or starboard depending on rotation.

What belongs in a safety briefing?

Life jackets, extinguishers, distress call, deck behaviour, toilets, gas, power, man overboard, first aid and clear roles on board.
